Our writers are split on the best way to dress on a plane, with various editors weighing in on their go-to outfits for flight days. Are leggings, my personal pick, too casual? While opinions differ among the team, the general consensus is that breathable basics in loose or stretchy fabrics are key for making the schlep as comfortable as possible. Unless you’re Pedro Pascal, that is, who was papped last month arriving in Nice for the Cannes Film Festival in head-to-toe Bottega Veneta, leather loafers and – gasp – jeans; a longstanding no-no for all of us on the digital desk.
But who are we mere mortals to question the jet set? Controversially stiff waistband aside, Pedro’s outfit makes sense. Slip-on shoes make heading through security a breeze, and a messenger bag that roomy is a carry-on only traveller’s dream. For more inspiration, we’ve rounded up six of our favourite celebrity airport outfits – and how to get the look yourself ahead of your next big trip.
Dua Lipa
Dua proves once and for all that wearing loungewear out of the house can be chic – provided it’s paired with a Birkin 40. Puma Palermo trainers, an oversized quilted jacket, white t-shirt and cat-eye sunglasses complete the look. While Dua’s Y/Project jacket is now unavailable for purchase in the UK (the last few pieces are on sale with a discount here in the States), Uniqlo and Arket have similar iterations at a more pleasing price-point, and Mulberry’s beloved Bayswater should suffice while you remain on the waiting list for the Hermes.
Elle Fanning
Elle masters the business class to boardroom look as she arrives in Nice in a smart baby blue suit and off-white pumps, toting Away’s Bigger Carry On Flex and an on-trend slouchy weaved hobo bag. Our editors are big fans of Away luggage – see our full review here – and this chirpy sea green shade is particularly lovely for summer travel. Pair with Cos’s oversized quilted bag in cream, or this Dragon Diffusion tote that’s lurked at the top of our wishlists for months.
Bella Hadid
Model Bella Hadid elected for loungewear on this trip to Paris, wearing a monochrome all-black look complemented with box-fresh Air Force Ones and off-white Beats headphones. We like Vuori and Pangaia for similar stylish matching sets. A pop of colour is brought in courtesy of her weekender; a coveted, very exclusive LV x TM Keepall Bandoulière 45 Bag from the brand’s Takashi Murakami 2005 collaboration. The range has been reimagined of late and, while the newer edition is currently sold out on the Louis Vuitton website, you’ll find some originals available on various resale outlets including 1stdibs.
Pedro Pascal
Like we said, we’d not travel in jeans but, admittedly, Pedro does look great here as he arrives into Cannes for this year’s Festival de Cannes. A good dose of Bottega Veneta – jacket, loafers, shoulder bag – elevates a failsafe jeans-and-a-white-tee look into something befitting of the glitzy Riviera. Chunky Matsuda aviators add some final film-star panache. Is it enough to sway us to don denim on a flight in the future? Perhaps.
Rachel Brosnahan
We’re handing it to Rachael – this grey cashmere tracksuit is the chicest loungewear we’ve seen a celebrity wear in this round-up. A floor-skimming black trench and baseball cap (a celebrity aeroplane style staple) are the perfect minimal accompaniments to this understated look. Plus, it’s another vote for Away luggage – this time for the brand’s classic navy carry-on. White trainers complete the look; we like Veja and Lululemon for the perfect casual travel shoe.
Rihanna
We’ve already written about Dior’s iconic Book Tote being the bag du jour for fashion editors on the move, and it seems Rihanna agrees. The singer pairs hers with an oversized denim shirt jacket, Off-White tracksuit bottoms, and furry sliders for some A-List pizzazz. Cos’s unbleached denim shirt is a chic option for this year, and we’ve spotted some similar fluffy slippers on sale with over 60 per cent off at Debenhams. Electing for a pre-holiday fire engine red manicure à la Rihanna is optional, but encouraged.
