Is it safe to travel to Rhodes? Everything you need to know right now

Here’s all the latest on travelling to Rhodes following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake

On the morning of Tuesday, 3 June 2025, an earthquake struck just outside Marmaris, a Turkish town located in the southern part of the country. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8. Tremors were felt in several nearby Turkish provinces and Greek islands. Rhodes, situated 24km south of the earthquake epicentre, was the most heavily affected Greek island.

Is it safe to travel to Rhodes?

There are no travel warnings for Rhodes on the UK government website at the time of writing, however, there are some safety tips for travellers. “Greece can experience extreme natural phenomena such as earthquakes, wildfires, extreme heat and flash floods [...] Register for alerts from the Greek government’s Emergency Communication Service”. See below for the government’s instructions on how to set up alerts:

  • “For iPhones go to Settings > Notifications and enable the ‘Emergency Alerts’ option at the bottom”
  • “For Android 11 and higher go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings > Wireless Emergency Alerts”
  • “For Samsung devices go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications > Emergency Notifications and enable the ‘Emergency Alerts’ option”

Since the government has not issued any travel warnings, there is no obligation for airlines or travel agencies to provide refunds for cancelled bookings. so no exceptional circumstances will allow for a full refund on cancelled trips.

Have there been other earthquakes in the region recently?

In April 2025, an earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck in the Sea of Marmara. The region is a seismically active area of Europe, and aftershocks are known to happen. As long as the FCDO advice remains unchanged, it is safe to travel to Rhodes.
